Theres a song by Elliot Smith called Between the Bars. For a long time I always thought the song was about prison. Like prison bars. Then stumbled into a discussion of this song where people point out how the meaning can be very open ended and open to interpretation.
Listening again to the lyrics of this song, one of the most obvious meanings is people who hang out in bars, as in places to drink alcohol. Smith himself struggled with mental illness and substance abuse so this is an obvious interpretation.
But one might also consider the genius of this creative musician where the ideas "between the bars" of his music reach us, years and decades later. This album was released in 1998 and still hits hard all these years later.
Perhaps the barometer for a true work of art, is one that people can project their own meaning onto. And even then, our relationship with that work changes over time, taking on new meaning as years go by.
Similar to Smith's song, my humble photo has a depth of meaning. Some obvious and some personal, with many layers in between.
