Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

Posted by
Jason Kravitz (Brussels, Belgium) on 21 July 2024 in Architecture.

Built in 1926, the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern was a water reservoir that supported the city of Houston, Texas by storing fresh drinking water.

The infinity effect you see in this photo is from the supporting columns which are 25ft (7.6m) tall but look even larger due to the reflection in the small layer of water still on the bottom.

It is no longer in use and is now a public space where they have concerts in the beautiful natural echoing chamber, as well as light shows like this one from artist Rachel Rossin and her interactive work, "Haha Real" based on "The Velveteen Rabbit."
