Chinatown Houston

My friend's in Houston, Texas always talk about going out in Chinatown. I imagined a Chinatown like in San Francisco or New York City, within the confines of the central city area with some unique features like a pagoda or red lanterns suspended above.

I was surprised to visit here to find that it is more like a strip mall of several shopping centers that are full of restaurants and shops from China and many other Asian nations including India, Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Regardless of the presentation, it was a happening place with lots of people hanging out, eating delicious food, and enjoying the warm weather. There were also several arcades with video games and even more popular, claw machines with lots of younger people trying to win prizes.

I love the layering that appears here. Or is it more of a double exposure? I echo your sentiments. This looks more like a suburban sprawl of quasi shops and restaurants, especially with the neon "OPEN" sign.

@Steven: Thanks Steven. This one was a post-processed composite where I merged a blurred out version of another building nearby on top of this one.

The Chinese know well how to enter the economic market of cities. In old Chinatowns, from London to New York, they used to create pedestrian areas and neighborhood shops. Today, they open shopping centers and create equipped areas to accommodate motorists. In Italy, we don’t have such large settlements, but all their establishments start from a shopping center.

A fascinating scene. I love the silhouettes of the people, the lights and the color. It looks like quite a crowd at this place. I agree, when I think of Chinatown I think of NYC or San Francisco. There are a few areas around where I live where strip malls have over time become mostly all Asian stores and restaurants. Usually in an area where there is a concentration of families that came here from Vietnam in the 1970's. A great image with a lot of energy!
