It's the contrast and low light that makes this shot! Besides the b/w conversion, did you do anything special to process? It almost seems like it was taken with infrared film.

@Ken McCoy: thanks Ken - I've been using Lightroom to do my conversions. A lot of times I mix up B&W presets from inside-lightroom.com. I don't recall which one I used offhand but would be happy to share my setting if you use Lightroom and are interested. The shot was also taken near sundown and there was a brilliant gold light on the trees which gives it an extra dimensional quality.
Thanks for the commentary in your reply to Ken. The light and shadow are what make this image stand out and it certainly looked like it had been taken in the so-called 'golden hour' for photography. The simplicity of composition is wonderful too and lets the photo really sing!
