The gases in this lamp are actually quite toxic. At some point in the history of London, someone thought it would be a good idea to use sewer gas to power the lamps in the city. What they didn't realize is that these gases were highly combustible and resulted in exploding lamps all over town. This lamp is the only sewer powered gas light left in the city. We were told it has several safety features to prevent it from exploding.

Shuva - the handle was for "leaning a ladder" against when they used to light the lanterns with fire each night. Nowadays it is powered electrically from some switch we are told.
